But we tend to forget that they can also cause a major health issue for our pets: heartworm disease. “Some pet owners I meet aren’t quite sure what heartworms are. And if their dogs don’t spend large amounts of time outside, they think they don’t need to worry about heartworm preventive. So misinformation is still a concern,” veterinarian Dr. Karen Todd-Jenkins says.
